Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 220 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors. 

Position Summary: 

The Climbing Camp Counselor will help the Camp Leader supervise and lead campers during climbing activities and ensure a safe and fun environment for campers to learn and enjoy the sport.  They instruct and guide campers in climbing fundamentals, lead group activities, and maintain a positive environment while upholding safety standards.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate games, activities, and group initiatives to keep campers engaged and learning.
  • Help reinforce climbing techniques (bouldering, top-rope, and lead climbing), including safety protocols, equipment usage, and gym etiquette.
  • Enforce safety guidelines, supervise campers during climbing activities, and ensure a safe environment. 
  • Collaborate with other counselors and staff to plan and execute daily schedules and activities. 
  • Follow established curriculum and contribute to the creation of lesson plans tailored to different skill levels. 
  • Contribute to the upkeep of climbing equipment and facilities, including setup, cleanup, and organization. 
  • Provide exceptional service to campers and parents, addressing their needs and concerns.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • A good understanding of climbing techniques, terminology, and safety protocols is essential. 
  • Ability to lead groups, motivate campers, and communicate effectively with parents and staff. 
  • Prioritize safety and implement climbing best practices. 
  • Ability to work with individuals in a courteous and professional manner. 
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in the midst of crisis.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in a team environment.
  • Detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, self-directed and punctual. 
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple projects simultaneously and to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

Education, License and Experience Qualifications:

  • Significant Indoor Climbing Experience 
  • Climbing Wall Association Climbing Wall Instructor Level 2 Certified 
  • Must be at least 16

Working Conditions

  • Environment: Working indoor office and outdoor events.  
  • Physical demands:  Must be able to sit, stand, and walk 8 hrs per day and lift items weighing up to 25 lbs;
  • Working Relationships: Students, parents, alumni, outside vendors, potential donors and all other employees
