Weekend Barn Coordinator

Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors.

The Opportunity:

The FVS Part-Time Barn Manager will be responsible for ensuring the proper maintenance of the horses on the weekends: both FVS-owned horses and those privately owned by students and staff. This position requires basic knowledge of horsemanship and horse management, including being able to safely and knowledgably work with horses. 

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for ensuring that all livestock on the property are fed both morning and night on the weekends in coordination with riding/ranch department personnel and students.
  • Horse checks - Morning (9am) and evening (4 pm) check of horses - ensure blankets and/or fly gear are properly adjusted, remove or add blankets as directed.
  • Maintain and clean paddocks
  • Clean assigned stalls in Main and Western Barn(s)
  • Fill water troughs as needed, clean and scrub when needed (Barn and Paddock waters)
  • Check herd horses 1x daily, ensuring they are in correct field and uninjured
  • Sweep aisles, in both barns
  • Check pasture fencing: fencing repair or construction as directed by ranch/barn manager
  • Minor repairs of jumps, trail equipment as directed (woodworking/painting)
  • Run manure spreader as needed
  • Weeding/Weed whacking during summer months around arenas, possible running of the brush hog around the barn area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Required Qualifications:

  • 1 year ranch and equestrian area experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and/or obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of hire.

 Working Conditions:

  • Environment: outdoors working with high school students
  • Physical Demands: able to sit, stand and lift 50-65 lbs. during a period of at least 8 hours per day, occasional after hours, weekend and/or weeknight obligations
  • Working Relationships: students, parents, outside vendors and all other employees

Salary: $15-$20 per hour, based on experience
