Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 220 students in grades 8–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors. This is a part-time, seasonal position reporting directly to the Director Athletics.   

Position Summary

The Head Basketball Coach is responsible for planning, leading, and directing the FVS Basketball program in collaboration with the Athletic Department. The Head Coach instructs student-athletes in fundamental basketball skills, promotes sportsmanship and team culture, and ensures full compliance with all Fountain Valley School and Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) rules and regulations.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Teach fundamental basketball skills, offensive/defensive strategies, and sport-specific techniques to student-athletes across varying skill levels.
• Plan, organize, and execute daily practices held Monday through Friday from 3:30 PM to 5:15 PM, as well as optional Saturday sessions.
• Attend and coach all scheduled season competitions, games, and tournaments (including weeknight and Saturday games).
• Provide individualized instruction and constructive feedback to promote athlete development, safety, and physical conditioning.
• Complete all mandatory CHSAA-regulated coaching certifications and concussion courses prior to the start of the athletic season.
• Collaborate with athletic administration and fellow coaches on program logistics, facility scheduling, equipment needs, and travel arrangements.
• Follow and enforce all FVS and CHSAA rules, safety guidelines, and student-athlete conduct policies.
• Serve as a positive representative of Fountain Valley School by maintaining professional and supportive interactions with all members of the school community.
• Maintain regular and reliable in-person attendance throughout the sport season.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Completion of CHSAA coaching certification and mandatory concussion training prior to the start of the season.
• Proven basketball coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level.
• Strong understanding of basketball mechanics, strategy, and student behavior management strategies for high school athletes.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with student-athletes, parents, faculty, and athletic staff.
• Dependable representative of the School who possesses a positive, professional attitude and strong leadership skills.

Preferred:

•  1–2 years of head coaching experience in a secondary school environment.
•  NFHS / IMPACT certification.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

• Environment: Primarily indoor gymnasium and athletic facility environment. Dynamic, active setting involving direct instruction and supervision of high school student-athletes.
• Physical Demands: Active physical exertion required. Ability to stand, walk, run, demonstrate athletic drills, bend, stoop, and lift or move athletic equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.
• Work Schedule: Seasonal schedule aligned with the CHSAA basketball season. Requires presence Monday through Friday during practice hours (3:30 PM – 5:15 PM), as well as weeknight and Saturday competitions and occasional weekend practices.
• Technology: Basic proficiency with Google Workspace, email, and communication software for team scheduling and department updates.

Salary: $4000, per season
