Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors. 

The Position: 

Fountain Valley School seeks a reliable, skilled, and service-oriented Assistant Land Steward to support the care, maintenance, and long-term stewardship of the school’s 1,100-acre campus. This is a hands-on operations position responsible for assisting with land and field management, tractor and equipment maintenance, weed and invasive species control, brush cleanup, compost management, semi-annual irrigation of approximately 100 acres of fields, and fence maintenance across campus. The Assistant Land Steward works closely with the Land Steward and Operations Department to prioritize daily work, maintain safe and functional outdoor spaces, support sustainable land practices, and help ensure the campus remains well cared for, safe, and aligned with the school’s mission and environmental values.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Land Steward with the daily care, maintenance, and long-term stewardship of Fountain Valley School’s campus
  • Maintain, inspect, and repair fencing, gates, and property boundaries throughout campus pastures and fields
  • Support semi-annual irrigation of approximately 100 acres of fields, including setup, monitoring, troubleshooting, and coordination with the Land Steward
  • Perform general land maintenance including mowing, weed control, brush clearing, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and fire mitigation efforts
  • Assist with land restoration, erosion control, soil health, native vegetation, and other conservation-related projects
  • Maintain irrigation ditches, drainage systems, roads, trails, and other outdoor infrastructure
  • Manage the campus compost program, including collection, monitoring, organization, and proper use or disposal of materials
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on tractors, vehicles, trailers, implements, hand tools, and power equipment
  • Remove deadfall, debris, and other hazards to maintain safe access and campus appearance
  • Support ranch, grounds, facilities, and special event needs when additional outdoor labor or equipment support is needed
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe barns, shops, equipment storage areas, and outdoor workspaces
  • Regular and reliable in person attendance
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in land management, ranch work, groundskeeping, agriculture, facilities maintenance, or related outdoor operations
  • Ability to safely operate tractors, utility vehicles, trailers, hand tools, power tools, and related equipment
  • Basic mechanical aptitude, including routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor equipment repairs
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems, drainage, and field watering practices—or willingness to learn
  • Ability to inspect and repair fencing and related infrastructure
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in all seasons and weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and communicate effectively with the Land Steward and Operations team
  • Dependability, flexibility, and willingness to adapt to changing seasonal and campus needs
  • Commitment to responsible land stewardship and conservation-minded practices

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of hire
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 year’s experience, experience in an independent boarding/day school environment preferred

Working Conditions

  • Environment: office and working with some outdoor events
  • Physical demands: able to sit and stand for at least 8 hours per day; must be able to lift 40 lbs.

Salary: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
