Director of Academic Skills Center
Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 220 students in grades 8–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics, and the outdoors.
The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Dean of Academics, the Director ASC is attentive to their students' strengths and challenges while working closely with faculty in supporting students they teach in the Academic Skills Instructional Program (ASIP). The Director of ASC is responsible for teaching up to four sections of ASIP and managing its curriculum. As part of their duties, the ASC Director also oversees the administration and proctoring of academic accommodations.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Hires, trains, and supervises peer tutors, and potential staff.
- Implements workshops, Supplemental Instruction (SI), and academic coaching.
- Liaisons and supports faculty and deans to align services with curriculum needs.
- Evaluates student retention in the program and uses outcomes to improve support services.
- Teaches up to four sections (2:1) of our Academic Skills Instructional Program
- Develop and deliver engaging course content catered to students in greater need of developing and maintaining academic and executive functioning skills
- Design and implement ASIP curriculum
- Regularly monitor grade and progress of each ASIP student through our FVS course website and check-ins with teachers as needed
- Collaborate with classroom teachers about academic progress of ASIP students
- Proctor exams for students with academic accommodations as needed
- Regular and reliable in person attendance
- Oversee the monitoring of evening Study Hall
- Committee work as assigned
Knowledge and Skills:
- Able to develop a constructive, learning-centered rapport with high school students from a wide range of backgrounds
- Maintains knowledge of current trends in learning education, especially with knowledge of executive functioning issues
- Able to work with individuals in a courteous and professional manner
- Communicates effectively in a team environment
- Detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, self-directed, and punctual
- Able to work independently and prioritize tasks
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in LMS Blackbaud OnCampus and Google Workspace preferred
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, advanced degree preferred
- 5 years experience in classroom teaching in an independent boarding/day school environment, preferred
- Must possess or obtain a Colorado Driver’s License within three days
Working Conditions:
- Environment: office and indoor classroom working with some outdoor events
- Physical demands: able to sit and stand for at least 8 hours per day; must be able to lift 25 lb.
- Attendance at certain community events will be required
- Working relationships: students, parents, outside vendors, and all other employees
Salary: $60,000 - $70,000
