
Assistant Climbing Coach
Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics, and the outdoors.
The Opportunity:
The assistant coach is responsible for collaborating with FVS Head Coach on planning, leading, and directing the Climbing team. They will be expected to follow the rules and regulations of FVS and CHSAA. This includes attending practices Monday through Friday from 3:30-5:00 pm and meets throughout the week, including most Saturdays. The assistant coach must complete the assigned coaching course and concussion course regulated by CHSAA prior to the start of the season. Seasons start August 2025 and run through May of 2026.
General Duties:
- Teach fundamental climbing skills: knots, communication, belay systems etc.
- Plan and lead structured climbing and fitness workouts
- Collaborate with other coaches to plan logistics for practices and competitions
- Provide individualized technique coaching for a range of climbing abilities.
- Attend all winter season American Scholastic Climbing League competitions.
- Supervise the climbing area and actively manage risk during practice.
Qualifications:
- Ability to complete the CWA's Climbing Wall Instructor Level 3 Course (offered at FVS) prior to the start of coaching responsibilities.
- 5 years of personal climbing experience is preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with athletes, parents, and staff members
- Knowledge of behavior management strategies for working with athletes of different ages and skill levels.
- Climbing Coach Experience
- Previous experience in database management, OnBoard/Blackbaud a plus
- Excellent analytical, communication and social skills
- Commitment to customer service
- Requires a strong attention to detail
- Team player with a strong capacity for initiative
Educational/License Qualification
- Bachelor's degree required
- Prefer IMPACT certification
- 1-2 years experience in coaching preferred
Working Conditions
- Environment: Gym, athletic field working with prospective high school students

- Physical Demands: Able to sit, stand and lift up to 30 lbs for eight hours per day, occasional weekend and/or weeknight obligations.

Salary: $3000 per season, Fall, Winter and Spring seasons
